Prometheus

PROMETHEUS – Choral work in three micro-movements for SATB Choir and Piano. Commissioned and premiered by Dr. Thomas Juneau and the Summit Chorale in commemoration of his 10th Anniversary as Artistic Director. Based on a text by Lord Byron. Some of the program notes from the composer includes, “my hope was to create a quasi-hypnotic musical experience by placing all of the words that I have truncated and extracted from the poem set “on the beat” (often opposing the natural stress of the text), inviting the listener to anticipate a word’s arrival in each measure and to hear a number of very muscular texts such as “immortal... eyes... sufferings... mortality...” The piano accompaniment is not unlike the initial choral entrance, laced with conflict and aggressive, abrasive textures to sculpt the rock to which our titan is tethered. As the piece progresses, the rock slowly looses its jagged, jarring edges and crumbles into (quite literally) a smooth and legato surface, anticipating the emancipation of the titan by Hercules.” For more information and additional scores, visit www.johnconahan.com (© John Conahan).
